Diego Martínez︎My work is defined by the aesthetic parameters of today’s photographic technologies. Nowadays, massive and immediate access to multiple high quality photographic tools juxtaposes with the eye of an amateur user. The social mass is thereby the main producer of images, and uses broad public platforms for diffusion: the result is then the over-exposure/ over-embellishment of (practically) all aspects of everyday life. My painting series reproduce the modus operandi of that actual gaze. The critical operation is activated in the moment of the selection of the model; in the visual transfer from the surface of the screen (television, cinematographic, digital, photographic) to the surface of the canvas. Therefore, the painting process causes a tension point because it takes back this actual image –which is quick, superficial and abundant by nature– to the slow dimension of traditional manual work, in order to suggest new lectures about the many cultural valorization systems of the image, and its respective symbolic functions.

Mi trabajo pictórico está mediado por los parámetros estéticos de las tecnologías fotográficas actuales. Hoy en día, el acceso masivo e inmediato a múltiples herramientas fotográficas de alta calidad se yuxtapone al ojo de un usuario amateur. La masa social es así la principal productora de imágenes, y utiliza amplias plataformas públicas para su difusión: el resultado es la sobre-exposición/sobre-estetización de (prácticamente) todos los aspectos de la vida cotidiana. Estas series pictóricas reproducen el modus operandi de aquella mirada actual. La operación crítica se activa en el momento de la selección del modelo; en el traspaso visual de la superficie de la pantalla (televisiva, cinematográfica, digital, fotográfica) a la superficie de la tela. Por lo tanto, la pintura provoca un contrapunto de tensión, en cuanto retrotrae esta imagen actual -rápida, superficial y abundante por naturaleza- al lento espacio del trabajo manual tradicional, para sugerir nuevas lecturas sobre los diversos sistemas de valorización cultural de la imagen y sus respectivas funciones simbólicas.
